The dam also allows the controlled
flow of the Colorado River into the Grand Canyon and
to the next lake along the Colorado River - Lake Mead
near Las Vegas, formed by the Hoover dam.
Our vacation
house is located in Big Water on the Utah side. From
here it is 7 miles to the entrance of the Wahweap
Recreation Park - the same distance as from Page on
the Arizona side. The house is built in the typical
southwestern style - the so called Santa Fe style.
Page is the place for shopping and
dining. The food stores, Safeway and Basha's have all
the products needed for daily use like meat, fruits,
vegetables, beverages of all kinds, and - not to forget
- a nice selection of California wines. For those who
prefer to go out for dinner Page offers a reasonable
amount of dining places. There are many hotels with
restaurants but there are also steak houses and several
other restaurants with mexican, italian, chinese, japanese
etc. food). Of course, McDonald's, Burger King, Pizza
Hut and Kentucky Fried Chicken are in town, too.
In
addition, Page has a golf course - nicely placed
along Lake Powell Boulevard with a good view of the
dam and the lake. The green of the meadow of the golf
course contrasts beautifully with the red colored rocks
of the area.
Page lies near the center of what
is known locally as the Grand Circle of National Parks.
Points of interest noted below are within a distance
of less than 300 miles.
The two very big attractions
of the area are just 2 hours away: the Grand Canyon
on the Arizona side and the Monument Valley on the
Utah side. Those two attractions are an absolute
Must to see. Many famous western movies were filmed
in Monument Valley. Also, Rainbow Bridge, the biggest
natural bridge of the world has to be visited. The
Grand Canyon and Monument Valley can easily be reached
by car; the Rainbow Bridge can only be reached by boat.
There are two options: renting of a powerboat and doing
the trip by oneself or taking one of the many boat
tours to this place.
Aside from these outstanding attractions
there are many other National Parks and National
Monuments, and Indian Parks such as Antelope Canyon
on the edge of Page.
In the map shown the most interesting
places are marked by a white spot. Clicking on those
spots leads to the display of one or more typical
pictures of that particular place.
For those not that
familiar with the area there are the National Parks:
Bryce Canyon, Zion, Arches, Canyonlands, and Capital
Reef (in Utah), Mesa Verde (Colorado), Petrified
Forest (Arizona) near to Big Water/Page. In addition,
there are National Monuments:Cedar Breaks and Natural
Bridges (in Utah), Four Corners (the only place in
the US where 4 states meet (Arizona, Colorado, New
Mexico, and Utah), Canyon de Chelly, Montezuma Castle,
Pipe Spring, Navajo NM, Canyon Diablo (Winslow meteorite
crater) (in Arizona).
Furthermore, very interesting
cities like Las Vegas (Nevada) with the Hoover dam,
Flagstaff, Sedona and the Oak Creek Canyon (Arizona)
and Santa Fe (New Mexico) are within 300 miles distance. |
